'Respect Judiciary,' urges Ex-Aide

Former State House senior private secretary Benson Katongo has called for respect for the Judiciary and decisions made in various cases before courts.

Mr Katongo said attacking the judiciary every time judgment was passed in a case would not help the country but would just work to dilute people’s confidence in the judiciary system.

He was reacting to attacks on the courts by several individuals and organisations after High Court Judge Evans Hamaundu dismissed an application by the state to register the London judgment concerning former president Frederick Chiluba’s corruption case.

Mr Katongo said the courts were independent and made rulings based on law and not on influence from the Executive.

It was difficult to understand why some people were attacking the judiciary when they were simply performing their duties as prescribed by law.
