Police warn and caution Mpombo
Mpombo (l) accompanied by lawyer Wynter Kabimba arrive at police headquarters

Police yesterday recorded a warn and caution statement from George Mpombo.

But Mpombo described his predicament as President Rupiah Banda’s monstrous Gestapo tactic to get at his perceived enemies.

Mpombo, who was accompanied by his lawyer Wynter Kabimba, arrived at police headquarters around 09:40 hours.

After their meeting with the police, Kabimba said Mpombo had been cautioned on allegations of six counts of false preparation of documents and theft by public servant.

“What is even more surprising is that just like PF leader Michael Sata’s latest case, the allegations against Mr Mpombo originate from the 2008 Auditor General’s report when he was defence minister,” Kabimba said. “They are saying that he produced false documents for the retirement of imprest when he was minister of defence. So they have administered a warn-and-caution statement on him that police are investigating those allegations relating to those six counts.”

Three police officers namely Stanley Mumbula, a Mr Nzowu and a Mr Shibatani attended to Mpombo when he appeared for questioning.

But Mpombo, the Kafulafuta MMD member of parliament, said President Banda’s grotesque tactics would not break his spirit.

“If I had been a subject of any audit query the suspect is normally given an opportunity to explain those queries,” Mpombo said. “My former office, just like the Vice-President’s office, had officers to handle such issues as the retirement of imprest. Anyway, desperate people do desperate things. Let’s see how they will go.”

Mpombo said he was ready to be taken to court.
