Police net in 131 BA anarchists

Police have arrested 131 people among them leaders of the Barotse Patriotic Front in Connections with the riots that rocked Mongu District over the Barotse Agreement of 1964.

Inspector-General of Police Francis Kabonde says the people arrested include 9 leaders of different groups calling for the secession of the Western Province from the rest of the country.

Mr Kabonde was speaking during a media briefing at Force Headquarters in Lusaka.

Mr Kabonde says those arrested will appear in court in the interest of peace and fair play.

And Mr Kabonde has clarified that only two people died during the riot in Mongu.

Mr Kabonde says one died after he was shot at by police while the other was found dead with spear injuries.

Meanwhile Home Affairs Minister Mkhondo Lungu says people arrested in Mongu for agitating last Friday's violence could be charged with Treason, depending on the findings of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr. Lungu says as of now, the matter is in the hands of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He says a decision will be made depending on the outcome of the investigations.

He has appealed to people in Mongu not to engage in any more violent activities because government is doing everything possible to resolve the issue.
