DEC arrests Baptist Church clergymen for money laundering
Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested four clergymen from the Baptist
church on the Copper belt for theft and money laundering activities involving
over K60 million.
DEC Public relations manager John Nyawali named the
four as Nelson Hayashida an American Missionary, Reverend Brighton Kafupi
Mpatisha, Pastor Mulenga Nkole and Thomas Lumba.
He says the clergymen in
their capacities as Directors and signatories to a bank account for the Baptist
Convention of Zambia did steal a total of K66 million from the organization by
purporting to have been duly authorized to withdraw the money when in fact
Mr. Nyawali says the four have been released on bond in their own
recognizance and will appear in the Kalulushi magistrate court soon.

issuing cheques amounting to over K40 million on an insufficiently funded
Mr. Nyawali says Dennis Kachimba, a former banker at one of the
leading international banks issued a total of eight cheques with a value of K48
million to his business partners which bounced due to insufficient funds
contrary to National Payment Systems Act no.1 of 2007.
He says Mr.
Kachimba still remains in custody after failing to provide two working sureties
and K40 million as bond conditions.
