Shoprite down tools

Shoprite workers have gone on strike demanding improved conditions of service.

In Livingstone a ZNBC News crew found Mosi-oa-Tunya square and two Shoprite outlets closed.

Shoprite Workers that were gathered at Mosi-o-Tunya square were found chanting anti-management slogans.

The workers complained that the company has continued to grow but that the conditions of service have remained poor.

And in Kitwe the Shoprite workers told ZNBC news that management has not been paying them their pension scheme for the last two years.

The workers closed the store and demanded to be addressed by Labour Minister Austin Liato.

The workers told ZNBC News that management agreed to start a pension scheme but wondered why up to date the administration of eligible member's past service benefits has remained un resolved.

Both National Union of Commercial and Industrial Workers - NUCIW - President Robert Munsanje and Vice President Phebian Ngoliya have confirmed the countrywide strike.

Mr. Munsanje says his union would hold an urgent meeting on Monday with both Labour Minister Austin Liato and Shoprite management to resolve the matter.

And NUCIW Union Vice-President Phebian Ngoliya says Labour Minister Austin Liato had directed the management at Shoprite to pay workers their pension money but wondered why the company has failed to do so.
